Life is one big series of choices.
You make a choice not to be angry.
You make a choice not to envy.
You make a choice not to be hurt.
Make enough of these choices, over time, you are not an angry person. You are not a jealous person. You are not a victim.
(To be sure, emotions are healthy things to feel in reaction to things. But they are not good companions to the living of your days, your weeks, your years.)
If you’ve made a poor choice, don’t dwell. (I am talking to myself.) Don’t dwell. You are not what others perceive of you–no, not even what YOU perceive of you. That negative self-talk? That repeating cassette tape in your head? Carve a new neural pathway. Rewind, record over it. You are not defined by how you feel in your bad moments. Or even on your bad days.
If all you have to give today is to do three things, do them. To the best of your ability, but do them. What saves a man is to take one step. Then another step.
Choose hope, not cynicism, because light is the radical thing in a dark world. Run the good race everyday and it’s the only race you will ever need to run.
