Jess Ray has a song called, “Deserve.” Her lyrics go like this
I don’t treat you as you deserve
You don’t treat me as I deserve
I hear this as child calling out to God, regretting how she doesn’t treat her Father with appropriate reverence and awe. The second line — I kept thinking it was God calling for some reason, as if affirming the line sung before it. I hear it now — it’s grace-laced affection received with gratitude by a humble heart — sung by the same person. If my mind doesn’t move to grace and thinks automatically of having fallen short, I have.
But it’s not God echoing a gentle rebuke. He pursues us even when we turn away.
And if we are to believe it, Psalm 23 says surely, your goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life…
